About TSI and Membership

The TSI is a professional association formed to represent trading standards professionals in the UK and overseas, in local authorities, business and consumer sectors and in central government. It exists to promote and protect the wellbeing of a modern, vibrant economy and to safeguard the health, safety and environment of citizens by enhancing the professionalism of members in support of informing consumers, encouraging honest business and targeting rogue traders.

The TSI has five corporate aims:

  • to strengthen the institute by developing its member base
  • to build beneficial partnerships that assist the trading standards service
  • to raise the profile of the trading standards service
  • to enable members to develop their professionalism
  • to capture and share useful information

TSI encourages the exchange of ideas and professional views and experience to gain mutual benefit and achieve greater effectiveness. TSI informs and educates both current and future consumers through events such as National Consumer Week and the Young Consumers of the Year Competition. It also hosts an annual conference and exhibition, which acts as a national forum for all-party debate on consumer protection issues and the exchange of news and views. Finally, TSI ensures its members are kept up to date through its monthly magazine, TS Today, which has been published for more than 100 years.

TSI offers student membership for those undertaking current study and full membership once study has been completed and qualifications successfully gained.
