Trading standards officers (TSOs) are qualified professionals who enforce the full range of trading standards’ responsibilities. Their work takes them to every type of commercial concern to promote good practice. They give legal advice and support and ensure compliance with the law, investigating complaints and checking the quality of goods and services.
The work varies according to location. In broad terms, those working in rural areas might spend more their time on animal health and agriculture while city-based officers spend more of their time on high street stores, factories and dealing with commercial fraud. Many work across different specialisms.
Concern about doubtful trading practice includes keeping a look out for potential hazards and unsafe products. Enforcing legislation through prosecution where there has been a criminal offence is a last resort and, on these occasions, TSOs collect evidence and appear in court when necessary.
Officers can also undertake a public relations and education role, spending some time giving talks in schools and to other community groups.
